MK Breakers are delighted to announce the signing of Michael New Jr!

New Jr moved to Milton Keynes from Canada at age 12, when his father Michael New Sr, was playing professionally for the MK Lions (now London Lions). New Jr came up through the MK Lions and MK Trojans junior programmes before attending MK College who at the time were competing in the Elite Academy Basketball League (EABL), coached by his father. Mike established himself as one of the best U19 players in the UK, leading his MK College team to the EABL Final Four and being named EABL MVP in the process.

Upon graduate New Jr received a scholarship to attend Western Nebraska Community College in the USA before returning home due to injury. New Jr finished his studies at the University of Worcester where he had great success on the court, winning the BUCS league, cup, and trophy, as well as being part of the now defunct Worcester Wolves BBL team.

Mike most recently played for Oaklands Wolves in NBL Division 1, but he is extremely excited to get the chance to play at home

“I’ve lived in Milton Keynes since I moved to England at a young age and grew up around the atmosphere and love that the city has for high level basketball. With a men’s team finally returning, I’m excited to bring my experience and winning culture to the Breakers and help put Milton Keynes back on the map! It’s an exciting time and I look forward to being a part of something special.”

“We’re thrilled that Mike made the decision to join the Breakers this season. I coached against Mike when he was a junior and he was outstanding. He’s had some bad luck with injuries the last few years, so I really don’t think we have seen the best of him yet and no doubt his best basketball is still ahead of him. We hope that Mike will be with the team for many years as we grow and bring high level basketball back to Milton Keynes.”

General Manager Josh Merrington on New Jr’s signing

MK Breakers Head Coach Billy Beddow added “Mike’s had a lot of experience playing in different leagues, after his junior career in Milton Keynes! His leadership is brilliant and his game is so versatile, he’s going to have a huge impact on our team’s success this season.”

New Jr is the Breakers third signing, joining Blayne Freckleton and Jordan Spencer in the back court for the 2022-23 season. We will be announcing more exciting player signings in the coming days, so keep your eyes peeled!

Your first opportunity to see the Senior Men’s team play will be September 24th when we host Loughborough Riders at Bletchley Leisure Centre, ticket information to be released shortly.
