This past weekend saw Breakers Men II make their 2026/27 home debut, taking on Worcester Wolves in the NBL National Cup.
Having played their first Division 2 league game against Cambridge Cats on Saturday, the team returned to Bletchley Leisure Centre with a noisy crowd behind them as they took on an opponent from Division 1.
There were certainly some early nerves as the visitors jumped out to a 12-6 lead in the opening five minutes, before Breakers showed an impressive defensive intensity that set the tone for the rest of the game.
Wolves failed to score again for the rest of the quarter, while Blayne Freckleton, Leon Henry, Luke Gregory and Kalvin Oates all weighed in at the opposite end. The second period saw much of the same, the lead extended out into double figures as MK5D Academy players Tom Rice and Anton Kelly continued their strong start to the season with impressive contributions.
If Worcester thought the half time interval was going to provide them with a way back into the contest, they would quickly learn it would not as Q3 saw them held to just 10 points Breakers continued to stifle their offensive play.
By the time the final buzzer sounded, it would be the home side who progressed to the last 32, a 86-60 triumph securing a meeting at home against Black Country Steelers, much to the delight of Head Coach Adam Digby.
“We knew it would be our efforts on the defensive end that would decide the outcome and if we can hold an opponent to 60 points we have a great chance of winning any game,” he said.
“This was the kind of performance that shows exactly what this team is about. Our senior players really stepped up today, showing our Academy guys what it takes to be successful at this level.
“What we need to do now is learn that lesson and put it into practice next week, with a league game on our home floor that will be yet another opportunity for this group to play in front of our fans. We’re looking forward to it!”
Indeed, the team returns to Bletchley Leisure Centre on Saturday October 3, with tip off at 15:30. Entry is free and we hope to see as many fans there as possible.
